Del Rey's extraordinary history and mix of cultures lends it an unexpected liveliness. It was originally a farming community, but the arrival of Hughes Aircraft changed that forever. After World War II, many Japanese Americans purchased Del Rey real estate and settled there after being released from their internment camps. The Venice Japanese Community Center - located in Del Rey - has clubs and organizations ranging in focus from bonsai to ukulele. Other ethnicities represented in the district include East Indian, Fijian, Hawaiian, and a large Hispanic community. Del Rey is also a relatively pet-friendly community. There is a local movement to have the park declared an off-leash area.
