Real Estate for Sale in Oakwood: History and Attractions

The land that is now Oakwood was originally set aside as a Black settlement during the 1920s, with Black families emigrating from the South to work in oil fields throughout the 1930s and '40s. What began as a Black working-class neighborhood soon became home to a number of Latino families, who flocked to the area to escape poverty. By the 1990s, Oakwood was the epicenter of some of the most notorious gang violence in L.A. history. But violence has declined overall in the past decade. Since the late 1990s, Oakwood has experienced growing diversity due to ongoing gentrification efforts. Despite its history of violence, Oakwood is a neighborhood on the rise, with stylish wood and glass homes lining streets like Indiana, Westminster and Brooks, where actor Dennis Hopper and other celebrities have reportedly purchased homes. The Oakwood Recreation Center - which includes football and soccer fields, a baseball diamond and picnic area-is located only 1/4th of a mile from Venice Beach. The Venice Community Center offers a variety of family and after school programs for at-risk youth.

Since the 1990s, Oakwood has been featured in the Architectural Digest and Dwell for its lush gardens and has been described as "hip" by the L.A. Times. Oakwood is just minutes from the Venice Boardwalk, an important tourist destination surrounded by Marina del Rey, Santa Monica, and Culver City.
